The Markets
Aerial Photography Markets
- This is a potentially enormous market
- Applications could include:
- infrastructure surveillance (powerlines and pipelines)
- crop monitoring
- natural disaster assessment
- forest fire detection and surveillance
- search and rescue (SAR)
- illegal fishing monitoring
- terrain surveys for large excavation projects (eg. mining.)
- Most of these markets are dominated by helicopter and fixed wing vehicles that run at much higher hourly rates than UAV's.
- Many of these applications – infrastructure surveillance, for example – involve surveys on a recurring basis. This could mean long term contracts, equating to steady cash flows.
Geophysical Markets
- The geophysical market is a $300m/yr market in Canada
- Our technology is perfect for this application: remote areas, tedious “lawnmower” flight patterns and a requirement to hug the terrain.
- Current competition consists of two or three large companies that operate globally, and a handful of small local operators. All fly either fixed wing or helicopters.
- Customers for geophysical market consist of large and small mining and exploration companies, and government agencies.
- If competing on price alone, Universal Wing feels, with its much lower cost profile, it should be able to achieve fairly rapid market penetration into certain segments.
- Universal Wing personnel have deep roots in the exploration sector and know the business well.
- We have completed about $1m to date in geophysical surveys.
- Universal's UAV can also be equipped with visual-spectrum cameras, IR cameras and instrumentation to acquire relief data.
